One of the most important things in today’s energy awareness is to have the right weather protection in one’s home or other buildings. Fortunately, today’s market offers a number of different things such as energy windows, weatherproofing, protective covering and others. A great deal of heat and cold can be found in the parking space which makes garage door insulation r value very important.

With the high demand for some type of home protection, against heat and cold, a number of different product claims were made. Many of these claims were not true and, as a result, the US Department of Energy stepped in and established a measurement of effectiveness called the R-value. This is determined by measuring the product’s resistance to heat. These values vary according to the climate area.

Insulation r value is an important part that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Each type of heat resistant material is measured and given a value according to how it is used in the product. Loose fiberglass, for example, when presented in rolls, batts, blankets or loose receive a rating of 3.2 per inch. Cellulose, which is sprayed on has a rating of 3.2 per inch and Mineral Wool, when blown into the ceiling or walls rates 3.1. Rigid insulation receives the highest rate of all at 4.0 to 6.5 per inch.

Garage doors are made of wood, plastic or metal, with metal being the most commonly used. It would be possible to spray on cellulose but it does have a tendency to chip off if constantly moved. Loose fiberglass could be installed but gives off very fine particles that are irritating to someone breathing and the constant movement of the door might make this happen. Mineral wool is too loose to use.

The remaining, and most practical, weather protection to use is the rigid insulation with the high rating. This can easily be cut to fit the door and would provide excellent padding against heat or cold. In addition it would be beneficial to keeping the rest of the house energy efficient if the garage is an attached unit which most are these days.

The correct insulation r value for garage door will maximize the effectiveness of the insulation.

Many people use this part of their house for a workshop or other activities. Having it ‘weather proofed’ by insulating the door would make it much more comfortable as well as usable the entire year regardless of the weather. This seems like a win-win situation both for comfort and for savings.

The garage door insulation r value is important when choosing what to use to get the most out of the investment. A person can check the package label to see how it is rated as well as check the Internet to compare brands. Having the very best available will more than pay off in the long run.

If you are a homeowner and would like to add more value to the property, then you can do this with adding some insulation to the doors of the garage. This is a good idea for some home improvements, especially if the garage is attached to the house. Here are garage door insulation kit reviews that will provide you with more information in this regard.

Whenever it comes down to having an energy sufficient home to live in, there are quite a lot of people who are unaware that the garages are very rarely insulated. Many homeowners never even consider insulating this part of the house. Should the garage doors not be well insulated, especially if the doors are made of metal, then the chances are really great that during the winter months your garage will be very cold and during the summer it shall be quite hot. With these garage insulating kits you shall be able to insulate this part of your house and make it more energy sufficient.

The best times to begin to use these kits are when you are ready to do some replacement of the door unit. When you do purchase one of these kits make sure that you consider the design of any doors and also the material as well. Other things to factor in will be the door size and its durability.

The kits for insulating garage doors are made of reflective foils and panels which are mostly fiberglass or polystyrene. So just in case of a reflective foil insulation, this unit comprises just two layers of the aluminum foil or vinyl coated ones around the core material. The polystyrene and fiberglass will consist of some plastic coatings that are on both sides of its material.

Be sure that you do check the RV on these kits, which should be available with three types, which are low, medium and high. This is the quality of all the material that is used for retarding the heat transmission. Should the RV be high, then this will mean that there is a high insulation performance.

Should you choose to install insulation with one of these kits, then be sure that it is very durable as compared to others such as the ones that are used for all wooden doors. Keep in mind too, that having the proper insulation will be very essential so to increase its lifespan.

With this insulation kit, you will find it very easy to install yourself, but if you run into any difficulties, then you can always go online to websites that sell this product and they will offer you help with this matter.

The need for garage door insulation blanket can not be underestimated especially during winter. The garage is one area in the house which is equally large but is rarely heated. It is likely to suffer extreme cold which can be costly especially the door when it is metallic. A special blanket for the metal is a sure and cost effective way of ensuring this extremely cold section is kept relatively warmer than it would otherwise be.

The purpose of the garage door insulation blanket is to insulate whatever heat that is trapped inside this room so it stays warm. They are available in the market at very reasonable prices and are some of the cheapest to fix. You only need to read the instructions which come with the pack and you can install it without the help of a professional technician. While serving the role of keeping metallic garage door warm, it incorporates beauty which means that you do not compromise the beauty of the gate by its use.

Polystyrene is the main insulation material and comes covered in high impact plastic that is fitted on the inside part of the gate. This insulating effect can be created by injecting polystyrene foam to fill every space between the metal of the gate and the plastic cover. Due to its high R value, this product will reduce the cost of keeping the garage warm to the minimum. The blanket comes in the form of kit and in case your gate has two shutters then you may need two kits.

Besides the kits, there is a weather strip that is used along the linings of the gate similar to what is found in cars. This is a rubber material which serves to seal any possible opening that may be left open when the gate shuts. The whole idea is to ensure that no air escapes from inside this room as the air inside will often remain warmer than that which is outside.

Garage door insulation blanket is a one off purchase which will reduce your heating requirement and associated costs for much longer. The weather strip is made from vinyl covered fiberglass, is light, flexible and does not interfere with the operations of closing and opening the gates. It gives the door the impression of a wooden material.

Instead of incurring high energy bills or waiting to find your gates frozen and shut solidly when you want to drive your car out, it is advisable to install such simple heat trapping material as a means of ensuring the heat available is trapped in the first place.

A garage door generally represents a fairly large walled area in many homes. As such, by properly insulating the garage door you are going to be able to vastly improvement on the homes energy efficiency, helping you to do your part for the environment and save money on your own bills at the same time. There are certainly a number of different products available that any homeowner can use in order to properly insulate their garage door. Many of these can happily be used without the help of any type of professional. Here are, therefore, some of the best garage door insulation tips.

Thermal resistance of insulation is measured in R-value. The number here will represent the ability of the material to resist the transfer of heat. As such, the higher the R-value of the material, the more effective it is going to be at insulating your home or garage. At the same time you need to understand that if the material is incorrectly or improperly installed, the perceived R-value of the material is going to be reduced.

One of the most affordable ways of insulating your garage door will be by using fiberglass batts. These will have a value of between three and four relating to every inch of thickness.

A more expensive option would be to get rigid foam panels. While these are more expensive, they are going to offer twice the heat resistance of the fibreglass, making them an excellent option. Both of these materials can happily be cut to the right size and then fixed onto the door using some type of adhesive or tape.

Many garage door manufacturers will also provide kits that have already been prefabricated and designed for insulation. These kits will fit onto your door perfectly because they will already have been designed around the specific type of door that you have. As such they will provide more complete coverage and are therefore an excellent insulation option.

It is quite surprising to find the amount of space that is not properly sealed around a garage door. An air leak can happily get into your home, totally reducing its energy efficiency. In order to fully insulated these tools, therefore, you may want to try using a weather stripping kit that is designed for garage doors specifically.

All in all, depending upon the type of garage door that you have, any one of these options may well prove extremely productive.

Insulating your garage door is essential in reducing heat loss and keeping the temperature even in the garage. Garage door accounts for as much as more than half of heat exchange in the garage. As a result, it’s recommended to insulate the garage door to reduce utility cost. Other than savings in terms of lower electricity usage, the insulated garage door also keeps the dust and pest out of your garage. Besides, the garage will tend to have lower street noise if it’s insulated properly.

One of the easiest ways to insulate your garage door is to use garage door insulation kits. These kits are cheap, costing around $100 to $300 depending on the quality of the materials. You can buy these garage door insulation kits easily in most local hardware stores. The instruction laid out in the guidelines is easy to follow and you can do the installation work on your own in most cases. The step by step installation task shouldn’t last more than half a day.

Garage door insulation kits can be divided into four main categories. The following paragraphs describe the different types of garage door insulation kits and their respective advantages, disadvantages as well as costs. You can also find out the different types of garage door insulation and which garage door that they will fit.

Panel Foam Garage Door Insulation Kit

The panel foam garage door insulation kit is one of the easiest for diy installation. Practically you don’t need any tools such as screws, tape or glue to put on the foam panels on the garage door except a utility knife to cut the panel into the correct sizes. The foam panels will sit perfectly inside the door-frame rail channels.

The over-the-counter foam panel insulation kits usually come with panels that are enough for a single-car garage door. If you plan to insulate a double car garage door, you should get two kits. The cost of panel foam garage door insulation kit is pretty cheap and the price is in the range of $200 to $300 for a single car garage door.

Reflective Foil Garage Door Insulation Kit

Reflective foil garage door insulation kits contains foldable foils that can be cut or trimmed to the exact dimensions that fit into any parts of the garage door. Usually people who are insulating their garage doors with reflective foils will put on the foil on the inside of the entire garage door.

The advantage of reflective foil is that the seal on the edge of the garage door is tight, leaving little space for dust to come in or heat loss to outside. The installation process is extremely easy as the entire foil is installed on the door. On the other hand, you have the option of installing one foil per door panel.

The cost of reflective foil garage door insulation kit is slightly cheaper and the price ranges from $150 to $300, depending on the size.

Fiberglass Panels Garage Door Insulation Kit

Fiberglass panels for garage door can be purchased in most local hardware stores. The price ranges in between $150 and $350 per kit. The kit usually comes with eight panels that are sufficient only for a single car garage door. The installation process for fiberglass panels is a little complicated but shouldn’t take more than half a day.

Other than fiberglass panel, the kit also comes with fastening screws and bolts that are meant to secure the panels onto the door. The advantage of fiberglass panels is that the panels are extremely durable and can last for more than 10 years. Besides, the fiberglass panels are very resistance to moisture and waters.

Foam Garage Door Insulation Kit

If your garage door is made entirely or mainly of metal, the foam insulation is the perfect fit for your garage door. To install the insulation onto the garage door, first put on the panels and then use a special tool to inject the foam material.

The advantage of foam material is that it’s very durable and offers high R value. Once the foam is dry and hardened, the foam material acts not only as a barrier to heat exchange but also as a sheet that prevent moisture as well as water from getting into the garage door.

According to research done by top notch university, as much as 70% of home energy use is for cooling and hearing the house. While it’s true that most homeowners are taking measure to insulate their homes including the garage, they have in fact neglected one of the most important parts of the house, the garage door.

The garage door is the largest door in the house and it can account for as much as 50% of the total energy loss if it’s not insulated. A non-insulated garage door will responsible for all the heat loss as air will flow through the door. The simple solution is to insulate the garage door.

The following paragraphs describe in detail how to insulate the garage door the DIY (do it yourself) way.

The Length and the Width of the Garage Door

The first step in garage door insulation is to take measurement of the door. The particular measurements that you need are the length and width of each individual door panel and the door as a whole.

While you are measuring the length and width of the garage door, take note of the number of metal stiles on the garage door. The metal stiles are what the hinges are connected to for the garage door. The easy way to figure out the location of the metal stiles is to look at how each individual door panel is divided. The divisions will give you the hints of where the metal stiles are placed.

Insulation Material for Garage Door

The insulation material that you are going to use to insulate the garage door is polyurethane foam sheets. Buy the amount of polyurethane foam sheets based on the dimensions of the garage door. The thickness of the polyurethane should be roughly ¾-inch.

This thickness should give you adequate R-value to insulate the garage door. You can vary the thickness according to your needs. If you want more R-value, buy thicker foam sheets.

The polyurethane foam sheets usually come with a protective backing on them. The purpose of the protective backing is to prevent moisture from sipping into the insulation material. Each stile on the garage door should be covered by polyurethane foam sheets.

The number of polyurethane foam sheets can be calculated based on the dimension of the stile. The insulation foam sheet usually comes in 8-foot strips. For example, if you have 10 stiles that are 2 feet long, you would need at least 3 8-foot foam sheets.

The polyurethane foam sheets can be easily cut according to the dimension of the stiles. Use a good quality knife for cutting the sheets so that you don’t destroy the insulation material.

Steps for Insulating the Garage Door

When insulating the garage door, you could work on the door from left to right. The first step is to figure out the distance between the underneath of the end stile to the flat portion of the next stile. Next cut the foam sheets by about 1/8 of an inch shorter in order to slide the insulation sheet all the way under the stile.

Take note of the height when you are done with the length. Again cut the foam sheet about 1/8 of an inch shorter to prevent the screws that hold the hinges from blocking your foam sheets.

When you have the height and the length done, carefully fit the sheet underneath the stile and in between the lip of the door section. Remember to insert the same size of vinyl sheet if the insulation foam you are using has no backing.

The above steps to slide in the foam sheets are repeated for the rest of the door panels. There is a tricky part for the last section of the door panel. For this part of the insulation work, you will have to put your foam sheet under two stiles.

The recommended way to do the installation without breaking the foam is to cut the foam ½ inch shorter for more room. Again if your insulation sheet is without backing, cover it with a vinyl sheet of the same dimensions.

Cautions and Safety Steps

Take note that you are not supposed to remove any hinge bolts of the garage door. Some of the bolts may be under high pressure of the springs and tampering with the hinges could cause severe injury.

The insulation aspect of the garage is a critical aspect of the overall energy saving mechanism for your garage. If your garage is insulated but the garage door is not, then you maybe missing something important for keeping the garage cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The fact is that a lot of heat can leak through the garage door making it inefficient in terms of energy saving if it’s not insulated. The solution is you add insulation to the garage door. An easy way is to purchase garage door with insulation installed or you can install the insulation yourself.

The following paragraphs describe different types of garage door insulation that you can add to the garage door.

Reflective Foil Insulation

Reflective foil is an excellent insulation material that can be installed on the garage door. Usually the on-the-shelf insulation kits consist of two layers of air-filled bubble wrap enclosed in extremely durable foil. These on the shelf insulation kits are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. The advantage of these kits is the high R-Value they offer and that means less heat loss.

The reflective foil acts not only as a heat reflector but also as a moisture barrier that keeps the door dry. The installation process is relatively simple. All you have to do is to cut the foil based on the dimension of the door panel. After that, just tape the foil to the door.

Some reflective foil insulation kits also come with white vinyl coating which gives a white interior color rather than the usual aluminum look.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is another excellent insulation for garage door. Spray foam insulation gives better R-value but is more difficult to implement if you are going to do it on your own. It’s more expensive to install as special equipment is required.

To install spray foam insulation on garage door, you will first need to put on a solid panel between the channels of each section of the door. After that you will need a special tool to inject the foam between the installed panel and the exterior door to form an insulating barrier.

Leave the insulating barrier to settle and it will bond to the panels you installed and to the wood or metal of the exterior door.

Fiberglass Panels Insulation

The fiberglass panels are highly popular for garage door insulation as they provide excellent R-value and are relatively easy and cheap to install. The fiberglass panels used in garage door insulation are pretty much the same as those used in attic insulation.

To install fiberglass panels to the garage door, you can buy those on-the-shelf insulation kits which usually come with readily made fiberglass panels. Some of them are pre-cut which means you can buy the panels with exact dimensions that will fit into the garage door.

Hooks are normally provided in the insulation kits and all you have to do is just put on the insulation panels according to the instructions that come with the kits. The fiberglass panels are generally covered with vinyl and they give a beautiful look to your garage.

Polystyrene Foam Insulation

Polystyrene foam insulation for garage door is similar to spray foam insulation except that polystyrene foam is readily made on the shelf. You can buy these insulation kits and install the panels on your own on the garage door.

The polystyrene foam insulation panels usually come with varying thickness that gives different R-value. As a result, you can choose how much insulation you need for your garage door.

To install polystyrene foam insulation on garage door, the panels can be easily slide in the door frame rails. Some kits include tape or fasteners to hold the panels in place. Thicker polystyrene foam can fits firmly and they dont require any taping or fasteners.

Most polystyrene foam panels are coated with vinyl to give them a beautiful look and to protect them from moisture.
